Gender affirming Voice Therapy

Gender-affirming voice therapy (GAVT) is a practice that focuses on developing a voice that is authentic and more aligned with your gender identity. The goal of gender-affirming voice therapy is to provide confidence in using your modified voice and learning techniques to manage this safely, avoiding the risk of strain in the long term.

Voice and communication therapy is provided across the spectrum of gender diversity. After a thorough discussion and assessment of your current vocal profile, we start to tap into your communicative and voice strengths and challenges and create realistic and attainable goals for your voice transformation. There may be aspects about your voice you want to preserve and other aspects you'd like to alter to make you feel more aligned with your gender identity and authentic self.

You will be guided through vocal techniques tailored to your goals. This may include pitch modification, resonance posturing, breath support and intonation variation.

Therapy extends beyond vocal changes. We also focus on communication and speech skills to help you develop effective verbal and non-verbal communication patterns that align with your gender expression. This may include aspects such as gesture, body language, pragmatics, discourse, articulation and vowel modifications. Non-speech noises such as coughing, sneezing and laughing can also be modified. Through targeted training, you can achieve a voice that feels true to yourself.

Here at Vocality, there is an understanding that voice transformation can be a deeply personal and emotional journey. A safe and supportive environment where you can explore and express yourself is provided and guidance, encouragement, and empathy will be given throughout your journey.

The number of sessions one might require for treatment may vary from person to person but typically, at least six sessions are recommended. These can be spread across a number of weeks, guided by you or in a more intensive block. Home practice is imperative with this treatment, so you can generalise the skills you learn in therapy to your everyday life.

The financial investment for GAVT can be found on th epricing page here. Vocality provides letters of recommendation for WINZ funding - find out more below.

"Sam has been such an amazing guide and teacher over the past few months.  I was so fortunate to be referred to her and I only wish it had come earlier in life.  She has so much knowledge about human voice; not just textbook information but also so many little tips and tricks that I use pretty much every day.  My voice now is a comfortable part of myself, not just for basic communication but also as an expression of my personality.  Sam makes great use of positive reinforcement, encouraging you to keep learning, growing, and improving."
